Walt Whitman sure liked Alcohol!

When reading, or attempting to read Walt Whitman's notebook, I couldn't make out very much. (I can barely make out my own handwriting). However, I found myself going through the drawings in the notebook. It looks like he was a pretty good artist, and these self-portraits definitely depict that. There's one of his side profile, one with a freakishly large head, and it looks like his hats just keep getting bigger and bigger as the notebook progresses. These images give a pretty good insight about himself, particularly about how others perceive him. But what  does the hat symbolize? I did some research on what a top hat represents, and it says that it's supposed to express power, authority, and containment of thought. Maybe the size progression of the hat represents how he expressed his thoughts less vocally towards the end of his life, and more into his poetry. Maybe he just liked big hats. Even though in the commentary it says that Whitman never doodled or sketche...

"Breathing dreams like air..."

I would describe the American dream as sitting next to your Olympic-sized swimming pool on a warm, sunny day, no cloud to be seen. Your soulmate is on the chair next to you, reading the newspaper. There's a cold Shirley temple in your left hand, and your butler brings more California rolls to the table. You scroll through Vogue’s Instagram to see that you’re their featured celebrity, again. The American dream is absolutely everything that society portrays as perfect. The American dream is renting out all of Disney World for a party because having millions to throw away is what we think is perfect. However, everyone has a different perception of what the American dream is. For example, my dad believes that the American dream is living in the 50s, no strings attached. Even in fiction, the American dream is different. In The Hunger Games, the American dream is living a day without hunger or fear. Pretty simple, when you compare it to my vision of the American dream. However, in litera...

It isn't Gilderoy Lockhart's "Magical Me" but I've got you covered!

Image
In one of my muggle classes, IB Language and Literature HL, we read and studied a novel with the name Never Let Me Go . Also, if you didn't catch it already, I am a huge Harry Potter fan and will be hiding numerous magical puns and jokes within all my posts. Let's get on with it, shall we? On the left, you see the version of the cover most people had in our class. However, many versions of covers exist for many books and can convey different meanings. It's a shame that the pictures don't move like they do in the wizarding world, though. I bet we could learn a whole lot more about the emotion being conveyed if there was a little motion added! However, with variations of the cover, there are different variations of meaning presented. Take the four covers shown below, for example.  At first glance, there seems to be a common color theme between three of the four. This is in reference to all of the covers except for the grey one on the bottom left. Each of th...

My Name

Caroline. Three syllables, eight letters, one person. 139,415 of us share this title. We are the 450th most popular first name, but do we care? Not really. A spoken name is just a series of sounds that our mouths make that correspond to a series of shapes on a piece of paper that spell it out. Calling someone by their social security number would be more descriptive, but our society doesn't function that way, thankfully. Apparently, when it comes to the British, Scottish, and American meanings, we are defined as manly. Does this matter? No, because one does not associate a person with the adjectives that go with their name, they create their own definitions. I'll introduce myself to any Caroline I meet because the back of my mind is telling me that they're just like me. Even though my name is the only thing I own that is used more by others than me, I am attached to it for some odd reason. Because it's mine . Because I love  it. Because no one can take it from ...
